asceticism

asceticism
This word (from the Greek askein, meaning "to exercise" or "to train" for an athletic competition) refers to the practice of self-denial for the purpose of spiritual growth or as an expression of religious devotion. Ascetical practices of self-discipline and penance include not only avoiding deliberate sin but also giving up legitimate human pleasures in order to advance on the way of perfection by embracing the Way of the Cross.
